Interior trends – new minimalism

Practicing the less is more mantra, new minimalism celebrates the bare-bones beauty of quiet restraint.

New minimalism

Not to be confused with austere and spartan severity, new minimalism looks to simplicity and refinement, with comfort and functionality at its core. A trend that never goes out of style, today’s minimalism hinges on lack of excess, with clean lines, selective decor and a concise colour palette.

Curate a minimalist aesthetic around existing architectural details, with pared back silhouettes and considered pieces that stand the test of time. Avoiding short-lived and disposable trends, every inclusion has a place and purpose, a lack of clutter drawing the eye to significant artworks and statement furniture. A variety of layered tonal textiles and complementary hues, create soothing visual play, while off-setting the subtle design narrative. Unexpected elements of faux furs, hides and hand-crafted pieces add warmth and depth.

Today’s minimalist style is different from the clean-lined perfection of the past years

The way minimalism as a trend is changing goes hand-in-hand with the latest big changes we are experiencing. We already talked about the “new well-being” as one of the major post-covid design trends here, and about the future changes of interior design after covid. The crisis we are living is inevitably cutting what was not necessary, superfluous, meaningless, by giving to the “less is more” concept even a more powerful meaning.  Contemporary minimalism is not about the idealized absence of things, but about choosing things with a meaning, that matters to us and that can enhance our well-being, physically and mentally.

But did you know how the minimalist style changed across the years? Let me share with you first some short historical notes to contextualize the trend.

There are some concepts to keep in mind when talking about the minimalist style now. We can recap them here ( by simplifying them a lot) :

Less is more is still a key concept, by choosing few items with timeless design and fine craftsmanship

Instead of visual interest, the focus goes on tactility and materials

Embracing a wabi-sabi philosophy, finding beauty in imperfection and in the decay due to the passing of time

Interior Trends – New Eclectic – Flooring Fx A mix of old and new, rustic and luxe, bold and subdued – the freewheeling style of new eclectic allows for individual design inspiration. For the sweet spot between contrast and cohesion, a new eclectic aesthetic encourages a mix of design periods and profiles for a uniquely personal interior.

Clean and geometric lines replaced by a mix of primitive and sculptural shapes with more linear ones

Natural materials and local design, as a consequence of a new sensitivity around environmental issues and sustainability

Minimalism is a true philosophy, not a simple style to be copied and reproduced at home, to be embraced in all aspects of life. Anyway, we can find some aesthetic distinctive features in the interior design which can be a good source of inspiration. We can recap them here:

Natural materials / cuoio / natural leather

             Unpolished finishes, raw woods

Soft and earthy colors inspired by nature

Off whites color range to inspire calm and warmth

             Tobacco and browns

             Black accents

Light pastels (ex celadon green, azure, sand)

Forest green influenced by scandinavian aesthetics

Be inspired by the desert boho style

Be inspired by the african style home decor

Be inspired by the scandi-boho style

New minimalism is a meaningful philosophy: it is much more than clear lines and comfort spaces, it is all about finding meaning and searching for well-being and mind clarity. The key to this trend success should be detail-oriented and high-quality furniture with a special and luxurious touch, as well as refined and colder finishes, like stone, marble, or brass. In order to reach a balanced room with unique decor details, minimalism stands out for its range of materials, bringing natural elements and welcoming light, therefore, creating a new sense of calmness and personality. Enjoy this trend as a way of improving your wardrobe.

The minimalism style has a whole range of purer and textured materials to conceive a smashing attitude, but remember: everything must be functional and related, adding value to the design itself, so you must think about what you need and make choices based on what will elevate your style.
