5 Timber Flooring Care Tips – Flooring Fx
Whether you are a home owner, DIY renovator, or an owner-builder, we are here to make choosing your floor an enjoyable experience - easily, affordably and all in the one place.
Timber flooring is a beautiful addition to any home but it’s also an investment. Often sitting at the higher end of the flooring product budget, getting the care and maintenance tips for your flooring right will mean you can enjoy it for longer.
Shoes are not welcome
Wearing shoes indoors is unacceptable in many parts of the world and it’s a good idea to follow this practice to maintain any style of flooring, hard or soft. Shoes can easily trap the outside dirt, stones and grit and bring them straight inside to the floor and cause damage fast. Hard flooring can suffer scratches while carpet can mark from dirt hidden in shoe soles. Encourage shoe removal by placing a rack or basket for shoes and somewhere to sit to take them off. A door mat at each entrance is also helpful for those times we forget.
Prompt response to accidents
While we can be as careful as possible, accidents do happen. Spills and dirt should be cleaned up quickly as to minimize any damage. Excess water sitting on the timber floor is not encouraged and dirt which is not removed is more likely to cause scratching by walking over it. This also applies to all hard flooring and carpet- the quicker response time, the better the result!
Continuous care
Like anything, continuous and preventative care is encouraged to increase the life of your product. Regular vacuuming and mopping will lessen the likelihood of scratches and marks. There are some more specific cleaning tips for timber and laminate flooring here to ensure you’re using the right product and techniques.
Our beautiful furry friends may be welcome inside, but they can damage flooring (both hard flooring and carpet). Keeping their nails trimmed will certainly help prevent scratches on your precious floor. Keep note of what’s attached to their paws when they come bounding in from playing outside too! Cat Timber
Placing furniture down on your new flooring is an exciting time as you begin to see your new room come together. Be mindful to place protective felt pads under the furniture and take special care moving furniture so it’s not being dragged across the surface.
Frequently used pieces, such as dining chairs may require the felt pads to be replaced more often so routinely check they’re still intact.
Where the furniture or object has castors, it can be helpful to place a rug or protective mat down to avoid any wear. This is particularly pertinent in a home office with chairs that have castor wheels. Also be mindful of plants. While they’re a beautiful home addition, overwatering can cause damage to the floor if excess water seeps out.
