How To Make Sustainable Flooring Choices At Home – Flooring Fx
Selecting new flooring is an exciting and sometimes daunting time. What colour, style and material will you choose and how much will it all cost? But what about sustainability? Are there sustainable flooring choices and what should we consider? Here’s our guide for the environmentally conscious buyer.
Carpet
If you’re in the market for new carpet you will find yourself with an abundance of choice. There is the beauty of natural wool but there’s also plenty of textural, beautiful man-made fibers as well. From a sustainability perspective wool carpet is a good option. Wool is both a renewable resource and biodegradable. It’s also naturally fire resistant and insulating. All of these are excellent attributes to a carpet that is also wonderful to walk across and live with. It’s a good choice for bedrooms, living spaces and areas where acoustic control is a consideration.
If you’re wanting a synthetic carpet solution, there are options here too. Triexta yarn is partly derived from corn sugar, making it an environmentally friendly material with the benefits of durability and stain resistance that the man-made fiber features. To find out more, head to the synthetic carpet collection and select “Triexta” fiber.
Hard flooring
Once again, natural materials really are the most sustainable choice for new hard flooring. Real timber floors are built to last and while it can take a little more effort, they are able to be repaired and restored without being entirely replaced if need be. Flooring fx timbers are also locally and sustainably sourced with many Australian species with their unique characteristics celebrated. The production of timber flooring also uses less energy consumption, adding sustainable credentials to their good looks!

Jute is another popular rug fiber which can add a natural aesthetic while being environmentally conscious. Our natural rug collection can be found here.

Carpet underlay is an important aspect of sustainability as it works to not only make your carpet more comfortable and acoustically efficient, it also extends the life of your carpet. It does this through minimizing the wear and tear of foot traffic and it’s impacts with the additional layer between the carpet and what it’s laid on. Flooring fx use Dunlop’s envirotred, a product which is sustainable in itself. Constructed from 90% recycled materials it’s also 100% recyclable. You can read more about envirotred here.
Buy once buy well
Sustainable choices are more than just the material itself. It’s the full life-cycle and the frequency of replacement required as well. Selecting an inappropriate product for the intended use or incorrect care can damage flooring earlier than anticipated. This is where the Flooring Fx team come into play. It is what they do day in, day out. Talk to your closest store to find the best possible solution for your unique home and needs. Less frequent replacement of flooring means a happier wallet and a happier earth.
Care and cleaning
Regular care and cleaning of your flooring, regardless of what style it is, will extend the life of the product. Allowing dirt and the outside world to stay on your floors increases the likelihood of scratching hard floors and marking carpet. Have a “shoes off” policy at home and ensure you vacuum and clean regularly. For more care solutions, head to our carpet guide and our timber guide.
